Alongside its PC business, it has expanded into the enterprise IT infrastructure market through VMware (a former subsidiary) and its storage subsidiaries. Founded by Michael Dell selling PCs directly by mail order out of a college dorm room, the company took the unusual path of going private in a buyout led by its own founder in 2013, then returning to public markets in 2018.
