Strong in high-performance routers, it's one of the leading vendors alongside Cisco in the carrier and data-center markets. Founded in 1996 by engineers from Cisco, Juniper built its own modular operating system, JUNOS, as a rival to Cisco's proprietary IOS, and won share in the carrier backbone router market. In 2024, HPE announced its acquisition of the company.
