OSI layer 5, which manages the start, maintenance, and end of communication.
The layer responsible for establishing, maintaining, and ending communication (session management). In practice its function is often absorbed into lower layers such as TCP, so it's rarely explicitly recognized as an independent protocol. RPC and NetBIOS sessions are classic examples.
