A defense technique that physically isolates a critical system from external networks, including the internet.
Because it categorically cannot be reached by a network-based attack, air-gapping is used in environments requiring extremely high assurance, such as factory control systems or classified government systems. However, threats via a physical vector—such as malware introduced through a USB drive—remain a risk.
