Short for General Data Protection Regulation, a strict regulation governing the protection of personal data within the EU, backed by substantial fines for violations. Fines can reach up to 4% of a company's global annual revenue or 20 million euros, whichever is higher, and it applies extraterritorially -- even a Japanese company outside the EU is subject to it if it handles EU residents' data.
