An operational task that saves a copy of data in a separate location in case of failure or corruption. Recovery time and cost vary depending on the backup method used. Simply taking backups isn't enough on its own -- a disaster-recovery plan only really works once it also includes periodic restore tests that verify the backup can actually be restored correctly.
