A 169.254.0.0/16 address automatically assigned when no DHCP server can be found.
Short for Automatic Private IP Addressing. A link-local address in the 169.254.0.0/16 range that Windows and other systems automatically assign when a DHCP server cannot be reached. Because this range isn't routed, a device with an APIPA address can only reach other APIPA devices on the same segment, and can't reach the internet at all.
