A mechanism where two connected devices automatically agree on communication speed and duplex (full/half) settings.
When both sides support auto-negotiation, it automatically settles on the optimal settings, but if one side is manually configured while the other isn't, a duplex mismatch can occur, leading to reduced speed or unstable communication.
