Overview

A standard that groups multiple VLANs into instances to improve STP efficiency.

Details

Short for Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol. A standard that groups multiple VLANs into a small number of spanning tree instances, reducing computational cost while allowing flexible design. For example, even with 100 VLANs, if only about three distinct topology patterns are actually needed, they can be consolidated into three instances -- cutting switch CPU load far more than a per-VLAN scheme like PVST+.
