A command that uses ICMP to check connectivity with a remote host.
A command that uses ICMP Echo Request/Reply to check reachability to and response time from a target host. A failed response doesn't necessarily mean the target is down -- in practice, it's often just a firewall along the path blocking ICMP outright.
