An attack that uses a precomputed table mapping hash values back to their original plaintext, to quickly crack a password from its hash.
Instead of recalculating a hash for every attempt in a brute-force attack, this attack prepares a huge lookup table (a rainbow table) of password candidates and their corresponding hashes in advance, dramatically speeding up cracking. It can be defended against by hashing passwords with a salt.
