A tunneling technology that encapsulates packets of various protocols within IP for transport.
Short for Generic Routing Encapsulation. A highly versatile tunneling protocol that can encapsulate packets of various protocols within IP packets for transport. It has no encryption of its own, like IPsec does, so when confidentiality matters it's often paired with encryption, such as in the common combination GRE over IPsec.
