An overlay technology that extends a layer 2 network over an IP network.
Short for Virtual Extensible LAN. An overlay technology that encapsulates layer 2 frames in UDP, building large-scale virtual layer 2 segments over an IP network. Where a traditional VLAN's 12-bit identifier tops out at 4,096 segments, VXLAN's 24-bit VNI can identify over 16 million, making it suited to multi-tenant use in large data centers and cloud environments.
