A number, like an address, that identifies a device on a network.
A logical address that uniquely identifies a host at the network layer. IPv4 is 32 bits (about 4.3 billion addresses), while IPv6 is 128 bits, giving an effectively inexhaustible address space. Unlike a MAC address, which is fixed to the device, an IP address changes depending on which network the device connects to.
