Short for Maximum Transmission Unit. The maximum size that can be sent in a single frame or packet. The Ethernet standard is 1500 bytes; anything larger is fragmented. On PPPoE connections the MTU is often smaller than 1500 bytes -- commonly 1454 -- due to header overhead, so it may need adjusting depending on the environment.
