A mechanism that discovers the smallest MTU along a path to avoid packet fragmentation.
Short for Path MTU Discovery. A mechanism that discovers the smallest MTU along a path and adjusts the packet size at the source to avoid fragmentation. If a firewall along the way blocks the ICMP "Fragmentation Needed" message, discovery fails silently and causes a one-way connectivity failure known as a PMTUD black hole.
