A next-generation IP protocol with a 128-bit address space. Beyond resolving IPv4 exhaustion, it also enables direct end-to-end communication without NAT, has a simplified header for lighter processing, and supports automatic address configuration. It isn't backward-compatible with IPv4, so migration typically relies on techniques like dual-stack, running both in parallel.
