An IP address used only within a limited scope such as inside an organization, not usable on the internet.
An IP address range for private use, defined in RFC 1918, that is never advertised on the public internet (10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16). Organizations can use these freely internally, but need NAT to translate to a global IP address when communicating externally.
