Troubleshooting

Asymmetric Routing

English

Overview

A state where outbound and inbound traffic take different routes.

Details

A state where the outbound and return paths follow different routes. It tends to cause communication failures on stateful devices such as firewalls. A stateful firewall permits return traffic based on session state established by the outbound packet, so if the return path differs, even legitimate reply traffic can end up blocked as unrecognized.
