Troubleshooting

MTU Mismatch

English

Overview

A problem where MTU settings differ along a path, causing packet fragmentation or drops.

Details

A problem where differing MTU settings between devices along a path cause fragmentation failures or unintended packet discards. It's especially common on paths where tunneling or VPN adds extra headers; PMTUD normally adjusts for it automatically, but if ICMP is blocked somewhere along the way, the problem lingers.
