Overview

A technology that distributes traffic across multiple routes of equal cost.

Details

Short for Equal-Cost Multi-Path. A technology that distributes traffic across multiple routes when several equal-cost paths exist, contributing to more effective use of available bandwidth. Path selection typically hashes fields such as the source and destination IP address, so a given flow always takes the same path -- spreading load across multiple routes without scrambling TCP's packet order.
