A mechanism that notifies both endpoints of network congestion before packets actually need to be dropped.
Short for Explicit Congestion Notification. Traditionally, congestion was detected indirectly through packet loss; ECN instead marks a field in the IP header to signal early signs of congestion, letting the sender throttle its transmission rate before any packets are actually dropped.
