A phenomenon where a sent packet is lost along the way.
The loss of packets in transit due to congestion, poor link quality, or similar causes. TCP eventually delivers the data anyway through retransmission, but UDP-based voice and video traffic isn't retransmitted, so packet loss there is directly experienced as audio dropouts or dropped frames.
