Short for Virtual Private Network. A technology that builds an encrypted tunnel over a public network, virtually achieving a secure connection like a leased line. Note that the encryption itself is handled by an underlying protocol such as IPsec or TLS; the term VPN is really just an umbrella term for this style of use.
