The process by which STP recalculates a new path after a topology change.
The process, following a topology change such as a link being added or removed, by which STP recalculates routes and stabilizes on a new path. Communication can be temporarily unstable during this process. Before RSTP became common, convergence could take tens of seconds, making frequent topology changes a real service impact rather than a minor annoyance.
