OSPF's backup designated router, standing by in case the DR fails.
Short for Backup Designated Router. A backup designated router in OSPF that stands by so it can immediately be promoted if the DR fails. It's elected at the same time as the DR, based on priority and router ID. Setting a router's priority to 0 excludes it from DR/BDR election entirely.
