Routing

Default Gateway

English

Overview

The address of the device that serves as the exit point out of your own network.

Details

The address of the router configured as the destination for a packet when no matching route information exists. Since it's the sole exit out of your own segment, a misconfiguration directly causes a total loss of external communication. In practice it's often assigned the first or last address in the subnet, such as 192.168.1.1.
