A method where route information is automatically exchanged and updated via a routing protocol.
A method where routing protocols automatically exchange and update route information with each other. Routes can switch over without manual reconfiguration when the network changes, say due to a link failure, but this requires understanding the protocol's behavior for proper design and monitoring -- an unintended route change (such as an incorrect metric leaking in) can itself become a source of trouble.
