English

Overview

A Cisco-proprietary protocol for making the default gateway redundant.

Details

Short for Hot Standby Router Protocol. A Cisco-proprietary gateway redundancy protocol serving the same purpose as VRRP. It predates VRRP's standardization and is still widely used in Cisco-centric environments. The active router is called Active and the standby router is called Standby; if hello messages stop arriving, the Standby router automatically takes over.
