An evaluation value used to determine the priority of a route.
The metric a routing protocol uses to evaluate a route; a lower value is treated as more preferred. What the value is based on differs by protocol -- RIP uses hop count, OSPF derives a cost from bandwidth, and EIGRP combines bandwidth and delay.
